Cognizant AI Lab Receives 59th US Patent and Continues to Drive Groundbreaking AI Achievements
In 2025, the laboratory in Teaneck, New Jersey, filed two new patents in the United States, launched a significant AI development platform online, and was awarded the Gold Award by GECCO. Cognizant (Nasdaq: CTSH) announced today that its AI lab has been granted two new US patents and a Gold Award for a research paper on „Realizing Human Expertise through AI“, presented this month at the GECCO (Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference) in Malaga, Spain.
„The issuance of two new US patents in the first half of 2025 — bringing the total number of patents for our AI lab in the US to 59 with 23 more pending — underscores our relentless pace of innovation,“ said Babak Hodjat, Chief AI Officer at Cognizant. „Along with the GECCO Gold Award, these milestones reflect our deep commitment to developing innovative AI technologies and translating groundbreaking ideas into practice.“
The two latest patents showcase significant innovations from Cognizant’s AI research:
- US Patent No. 12,282,845 (granted on April 22, 2025) covers a method for Multi-Objective Coevolution of Deep Neural Network Architectures, aiming to enhance model performance and resource efficiency. The application of this method ranges from medical image classification to natural language processing.
- US Patent No. 12,292,944 (granted on May 6, 2025) describes a method for optimizing loss functions through Taylor Series Expansion, targeting improved training efficiency and model robustness, particularly in scenarios with limited data.
These innovations, developed by Cognizant researchers such as Dr. Jason Liang, Dr. Elliot Meyerson, and Professor Risto Miikkulainen, underscore Cognizant’s leadership in pushing the boundaries of AI and machine learning.
To make the promise of artificial intelligence both practical and more widely accessible, Cognizant’s AI lab released its Neuro AI Multi-Agent Accelerator earlier this year. Neuro AI helps companies accelerate the development and deployment of AI agents, transforming their business processes for adaptive workflows, real-time decisions, and personalized customer experiences tailored to customer-defined goals and oversight.
Cognizant’s AI lab, inaugurated in San Francisco in March 2024, was also awarded the Gold Award for Human-Competitive Results at GECCO 2025 for its groundbreaking work on Realizing Human Expertise through AI (RHEA). RHEA, developed by Dr. Elliot Meyerson and Professor Risto Miikkulainen, uses evolutionary AI to distill and remix refined decision strategies from hundreds of models created by human expert teams — notably those submitted for the XPRIZE Pandemic Response Challenge. In a rigorous evaluation, RHEA outperformed individual human contributions, realizing the latent potential even in partially developed human ideas, leading to innovative recommendations for pandemic policies.
Risto Miikkulainen, Vice President for Research and Professor of Computer Science at UT Austin, commented, „RHEA is a strong example of how evolutionary AI can amplify global human intelligence — not just by aligning solutions from experts, but by going beyond to discover new, highly effective strategies.
